The Source Usability Test

This test was conducted to identify areas of improvement within the Source Canada website in order to improve their users’ experience.

Time: Nov – Dec 2020

Tool: Figma, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop

Role: UX/UI Design

Overview

This test was completed by having a group of individuals complete a screening questionnaire and having those appropriate continue to complete a set of tasks on the website. During the course of testing, we were able to successfully identify problematic areas and develop recommendations as necessary.

The main takeaways were that the layout does not match with the functionality and overwhelms the user with too much text, the site tasks are not user friendly due to unnecessary complexity, and that the user needs to become familiar with the website in order to navigate properly.

Our recommendations are to improve the website’s overall navigation, implement higher quality and more direct graphics, and integrate additional UI elements.

Key Problems

1. The layout does not match the functionality and overwhelms the user with too much text.

2. Needs to become familiar with the website in order to navigate properly for the ideal users.

3. The site tasks are not user-friendly due to unnecessary complexity.

Key Hypothesis

1. We believe that average scroll depth rates will increase if shoppers are able to identify an item and select a color within its product page.

2. We believe that page bounce rates will be reduced by 5% if product categories are organized clearly with clear graphics on the navigation.

3. We believe The Source would decrease in click-through rate if the product page had less info to scroll down and be replaced with a dropdown menu of the info on the product.

Testing

We created screener questions, three tasks, and SUS to evaluate the website. Next, we selected 2-3 screener candidates and then pick one of them for the test.

Here are tasks that are conducted:

  • Please find a Bluetooth speaker with 4 different color variations.
  • Please find a sale section.
  • Please find the product dimensions.

Task Results

Task1

– Confused about where the color selection located

– Does not like products with different colors are listed separately

Task2

– Used the prediction search but didn’t find the sale section

– Found the navigation is confusing

– Felt the buttons were misleading

Task3

– User mentioned, “I’m lazy to find specific feature because of too much text.”

– Certain product description sections are oddly placed.

– Felt like there was too much scrolling.

System Usability Scale

(SUS)

The average usability score of The Source website is 46.7. This indicates the website needs to review and identify problems encountered with the interface. As we stated in our testing goals, we hope to improve the user’s satisfaction with the website and the overall SUS score.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the usability test of the Source Canada website shows that there are issues regarding the navigation and overall structure of the website. Based on our testing, we found that the participants experienced difficulty completing the given tasks of finding a bluetooth speaker sold in 4 different colour variations, finding a sale section, and finding the dimensions of the given product, therefore validating our hypotheses. By implementing the recommendations as outlined previously, we will be able to determine what efforts effectively reach the users. The next step in applying these recommendations is to provide prototypes with the recommended solutions.
